Eight other ways to find recruits

Recruitment websites

You'll find a huge choice online. If you haven't used one before it might be helpful to find out which ones employer forums or peers recommend. You'll also find websites that only deal with your sector. Here is just a small selection of the more general ones on offer: s1jobsScotCareers; ScotRecruit; and Job in Scotland.

Recruitment agencies

Some of these companies deal with specific sectors or specialise in executive level searches and they may already have a database of potential candidates. Remember they will charge a fee.

Social media

LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and your own website are all excellent resources to make contact with your potential new employee. Increasingly we source much of our information online and if you want to attract a young person, then a website like My World of Work is a great place to start your search.

The Press

Advertising through national, regional and local newspapers and trade journals is the traditional route to spreading the word and remains an effective way to let people know you are hiring.

Education

Your local schools, colleges, universites and the Careers Service are places where you can make direct connections with potential recruits. Is work experience a viable alternative to recruiting a new employee? Have you considered qualifications such as the Certificate or Work Readiness or Foundation Apprenticeships to fill gaps?

Headhunting or scouting

You can use your existing networks or create new ones through recruitment agencies or business or education links to find your prospective candidate.

Redundancy

Have you considered getting in touch with an organisation such as PACE to find out if any employees in your sector have been made redundant? It’s a win-win for both you and that person. You get the skills and they get hired.

Direct approaches or recommendations

Sometimes it really is about who you know. Help spread the word through your current employees that the role will be available and you’ll have access to many more sets of contacts.
