Open Doors Consortium Enhanced Modern Apprenticeship Support Package is funded by the Scottish Government to raise the profile of young people with barriers to employment within the Scottish workforce.

Over the past year (17/18), Open Doors Consortium Scotland has supported 20 young people with barriers to employment to gain access to a Modern Apprenticeship. Due to the success and need for further support, funding has been granted to support a further 60 young people across Scotland to gain and sustain Modern Apprenticeships.

What are the aims?

The aim of the Enhanced Modern Apprenticeship Support Package is to increase the volume of young people with disabilities, long term health conditions inclusive of mental health and other barriers such care leavers, ex-offenders and young carers into sustainable apprenticeship opportunities. The wider aim is to broaden diversity within Modern Apprentices in order to enable those facing barriers to access these opportunities with support.

How does the support package work?

Open Doors Scotland offer free ongoing support and advice for:

The young person

  • Support to identify, apply and prepare for an MA
  • Support ‘on the job’ if required through job coaching
  • Mentoring ‘on/off the job’ to make sure everything is going smoothly at and out with work
  • Support to successfully achieve the academic side of the MA
  • Support with studying, reading/writing etc; financial guidance and travel training

The employer

  • Support to recruit from the Open Doors Consortium talent pool
  • Support to make reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process and throughout the MA
  • Support to access funding needed for the young person
  • Unlimited and ongoing advice and free disability awareness training for the employer and colleagues

Training Providers

  • Support to recruit from Open Doors Consortium’s diverse talent pool
  • Support to make reasonable adjustments at recruitment process
  • Free bespoke awareness training
  • Ongoing support from a qualified Supported Employment Coordinator
  • Support to make reasonable adjustments to training material and the training process
  • Support to access funding such as Access to Work
