Modern Apprenticeship

 

What is it? Hire a motivated young person and equip them with structured, on-the-job training that's designed for your needs. You’ll pay their wages and we’ll contribute to the cost of training.

Why get involved? Apprenticeship frameworks cover a wide range of digital technology skills from Hardware, Infrastructure, Systems and Software to Data, Digital marketing, Project management and Cyber security. You can train someone to your requirements and give them an industry recognised qualification. You'll also be getting an employee who'll know your business inside out.

What's required?

  • You’ll commit to a full-time, paid employee for the duration of the apprenticeship. Technology apprenticeships typically range from one to two years
  • Choose a framework and training provider that best suits your needs. We can give you advice on this
  • Advertise your vacancy for free on apprenticeships.scot
  • We’ll contribute to the cost of training. There are different contribution rates depending on the age and circumstances of the apprentice you want to hire.

Graduate Apprenticeship

 

What is it? Industry-led learning to degree level.  You'll take on an employee and support them to learn an advanced skillset. Graduate Apprenticeships can be used to train people in a growing range of skills including Cyber, Software, Data, IT business management, Systems and network management, Project management.

Why get involved? Graduate Apprenticeships are a great alternative to traditional graduate schemes. You'll get employees who develop and grow your business. 

What's required?

  • You’ll commit to a full-time, paid employee for the duration of the Graduate Apprenticeship. 
  • Choose a framework that suits your business needs.  Find the nearest university that offers your chosen course.
  • Discuss your requirements with the university. Create a job description with entry requirements and a closing date
  • Advertise your vacancy for free on apprenticeships.scot
  • We’ll contribute to the cost of training. There are different contribution rates depending on the age and circumstances of the apprentice you want to hire.

CodeClan

 

What is it?  CodeClan helps you source skilled professionals who've switched career to move into tech focused roles, including software developers, testers and product owners. CodeClan provides intensive courses to fast-track people ready for entry-level jobs in the industry.

Why get involved?  With people graduating every six to eight weeks in both Edinburgh and Glasgow you'll have regular access to high-quality tech talent. Many of CodeClan's graduates come from careers and degrees in other sectors and bring with them valuable transferable skills.

What's required?

  • Become a CodeClan partner to get access to student profiles/CVs, meet students and raise awareness of your business amongst students and graduates.
  • There is no cost involved in becoming a partner and the process is quick and simple.
  • Fees are only paid when you hire a CodeClan graduate. Fees are determined by headcount of your organisation.

CodeClan

What is it? CodeClan provide short intensive training courses to upskill or retrain your existing employees in relevant topic areas or bespoke to your requirements. CodeClan has delivered a range of bespoke courses to a number of clients in the legal, financial and education sectors.

Why get involved? Boost the skills of your existing employees with super fast intensive training courses. CodeClan offer a variety of upskilling courses in response to employer demand. These include Programming, User Experience design, Agile leadership and more.

What’s required?

  • You or one of your employee can attend one of our scheduled short courses.
  • You can get in touch with CodeClan to discuss your development requirements of your team or organisation and a bespoke programme can be developed.

Inspire young people to choose a career in technology. Here's how to get started:

Digital World

 

What is it? Digital World is an industry-led marketing campaign designed to inspire young people to consider a career in tech. The campaign needs employers and people working in tech to help promote digital technology as an exciting and attractive career.

Why get involved? Build awareness of your organisation and the wider tech sector with school, college and university pupils, as well as parents and careers advisers. 

What’s involved?

  • Activities are free to take part in and vary in time and resource requirement from one hour and one person upwards.
  • Choose opportunities that fit your audience, location and availability.
  • Take part in tech career talks, events and recruitment fairs for free.
  • Feature your organisation and tech employees in Digital World marketing and PR, free of charge.
  • Encourage your tech employees to act as role models by taking part in activities with you.

Marketplace

What is it? Marketplace is an online tool connecting you with schools and college across Scotland. Build awareness of your organisation and industry by offering workshops, talks, workplace visits or placements.

Why get involved? You can inspire young people to work in your sector. By delivering opportunities to young people, you'll build their job readiness. At the same time, you’ll raise the profile of who you are and what you do. It’s also great for staff development. Your employees will gain a sense of achievement in helping young people.

What’s required?

  • Get advice and support from your local Marketplace representative to help you plan and promote your activity
  • Decide what you want to offer including audience and location. This can be as specific as just one school in your neighbourhood or as wide as across Scotland
  • Tailor your own activity based on the time and resource you have available.

Foundation Apprenticeship

What is it? You’ll bring S5 and S6 school pupils into your business and provide on-the-job training. Your Foundation Apprentice will work towards a qualification in digital technology that's equivalent to a Higher. They'll learn what it’s like to have a job in tech and work on real world projects.

Why get involved? It’s a great way to build links with local schools and colleges. It could help you spot future employees who you could fast-track into your organisation, for example via a Modern Apprenticeship. Young people bring energy and fresh ideas to your business

What’s required?

  • You provide a work placement to the Foundation Apprentice during their S6 year. Typically, 1 day a week for 6 months.
  • We cover the costs of their qualification at a local training provider
  • You chose a subject you’d like to support the Apprentice to learn, such as Software, Hardware or Creative Digital Media.

Digital Xtra fund

What is it? Digital Xtra Fund is a skills charity created to inspire young people to create technology, not just consume it. Backed by businesses, organisations, and individuals with a common will to help young people succeed in a digital world, the Fund enables high-quality, engaging extracurricular digital technology activities across Scotland.

Why get involved?  Activities supported by Digital Xtra Fund have engaged thousands of young people, teaching them key digital skills for their future as well as the breadth of careers these skills can provide. Without support from the Fund, many of these activities simply would not take place. With your support, the Fund will enable more activities across Scotland to inspire and support more young people.or time you'll help more school pupils get inspired.

What’s required:

  • Become a Charity Partner of Digital Xtra Fund by helping support a grant for digital tech activities which can be awarded nationally, regionally, or by audience, e.g. supporting activities for girls
  • Partners also have the opportunity to engage with supported initiatives via employee engagement or with additional in-kind support
  • Discuss partner options, benefits and funding levels with the team at Digital Xtra Fund

Become a role model or mentor

What is it? Challenge gender stereotypes in schools and inspire young women to consider computer science and technology subjects. You’d open their eyes to the exciting world of digital technology and explain where a career in digital could take them.

Why get involved?  By sharing your experiences you’ll inspire young females to become the tech superstars of tomorrow. You’ll also build awareness of your business with young females, schools and colleges helping you spot future talent.

What’s required?

  • Use the directory to find an organisation you’d like to volunteer through
  • Use the guidance materials to learn how to become a good role model or mentor
  • Use the classroom activities to support you going into schools with a range of ready made activities which you can tailor to your preference
  • Tailor your own activity based on the time and resource you have available.

Attract and support women into your business

What is it?  We’ve developed a best practice to guide to help you attract and retain more women in your workforce. It’s packed with experiences from Scottish tech employers and the steps they’ve taken to improve the representation of women in their teams.
