Rapid expansion left family owned environmental engineering solutions business in need of an outside perspective.

“Our growth hasn’t come without its growing pains,” says Uisdean Fraser, Managing Director at Synergie Environ.

The Glasgow-based company recently moved into a new office to cope with their rapidly growing client base. And with staffing increased from four to 12 in a year, predicted turnover of over £1m and a Dubai office in the pipeline, they needed support right away.

The company looked to Skills for Growth for help.

“Getting someone to make us stand back from the business helped motivate some well needed change,” Uisdean says.

 

Sustainable growth

“Skills for Growth allowed us to get the right advice to sustain our growth,” adds Marina Fraser, Director. "First we discussed our needs with Lauren Paterson, our Employer Engagement Adviser from SDS."

"She organised the next step which included Investors in People talking to our staff individually and understanding how our business operated." 

As an engineering business charging daily rates to clients the team were apprehensive about the time commitment needed.

“But once we got the process started the benefits were ten-fold,” Marina says. “From the staff session we implemented things like regular team meetings, staff appraisals, objectives and pay structures.”

One-to-one support

Having Lauren as a one-to-one contact really made the difference as she continued to support Synergie Environ.

“It’s not just about funding opportunities; Lauren is interested where our business is going next,” Marina enthused.

“We now have a named contact to use as a sounding board for our development ideas. Being so time poor that’s a valuable thing to have.”

One of the first things Lauren helped with was identifying training opportunities. “We realised staff training was absolutely critical,” says Uisdean.

“We developed some external bespoke training for Low Carbon District Heating; there isn’t any formal training for that in Scotland,” adds Marina. “Lauren helped us understand if the Low Carbon Skills Fund would support us.”

A detailed plan

At the end of the process the firm were given a development plan and ongoing support. For Marina, it was a positive experience for their business.

“It’s been a catalyst for us, someone with an outside perspective helping us to better achieve our goals,” she says.
