Administration, Business and Management

As an employer, you will need to consider whether existing Modern Apprenticeship training courses fit your needs or if you require bespoke training.  Business and Management sector approved courses at different SVQ levels have been developed by Skills CFA, the Sector Skills Council for this sector in consultation with employers.  As a starting point to deciding on training, you might want to consider the types of MA offered, the job roles that are covered and the entry requirements.


Once you've found the Modern Apprenticeship that's right for you, the next step is to find a training provider.

  • Every business and organisation has certain procedures to follow, administration to be done, equipment and resources to be used effectively and planning and preparation to be organised for different situations. A sound grounding in all of these principles is a key part of Modern Apprenticeships in this area.

    Entry requirements:

    • Level 2 (SCQF 5), Level 3 (SCQF 6/7), Level 4 (SCQF 8/9) None - although experience working in the industry would be useful

    Job roles:

    • Level 2 (SCQF 5) -  administration assistant, clerical assistant, data entry clerk, filing/records clerk, junior secretary, office clerk, receptionist
    • Level 3 (SCQF 6/7) - administrator, administration clerk/officer, executive officer, administration team leader, office supervisor, personal assistant, secretary
    • Level 4 (SCQF 8/9) - administration manager, executive officer, office manager, office supervisor, PA, secretary, senior secretary

    Skills and attributes:

    • Have good communication skills
    • Be happy working alone or as part of a team
    • Be good at organising and problem solving and good organisation
    • Be numerate
    • Have awareness of information and communication technology

  • The Housing Modern Apprenticeship Framework has been developed in consultation with Housing Associations, to increase the number of young people in the sector and address projected future skills gaps. The Framework is designed to equip employees with the communication, interpersonal, transferable and multi-tasking skills needed to succeed in this growing industry.

    Entry requirements:

    • No formal qualifications required, although an interest in working in Housing is desirable.

    Job roles:

    • Level 2 (SCQF 5) - housing administrator, housing repairs assistant, housing assistant, assistant housing officer/repairs officer
    • SVQ Level 3 (SCQF 6/7) – housing officer, housing support officer, service support (homelessness prevention or quality assurance roles)

    Skills and attributes:

    • An awareness of the ethos behind social housing
    • An interest in social equality
    • An understanding of how a strong community is life enhancing
    • Good communication and people skills
    • Good team working skills

  • Modern Apprenticeships in Management have been designed to provide flexible and portable qualifications, units and skill sets which meet the current and future needs of employers of all sizes and across all sectors. Management covers specialised skills, such as leadership, which requires self management, relationship building, negotiation and influencing skills. Communication and decision making skills, information technology skills and project management skills all play a vital part in Modern Apprenticeships in this area.

    Entry requirements:

    • There are no specific entry requirements. However the Modern Apprenticeships in Management are designed to attract motivated, enthusiastic and capable individuals. 

    Job roles:

    • SVQ Level 3 (SCQF 6/7) - senior supervisor, section head, developer, manager.
    • SVQ Level 4 (SCQF 8/9) - management, professional work or technical work
    • SVQ Level 5 (SCQF 11) - director, general manager, executive manager
